In recent years, China has shifted from copycat to pioneer across a wide range of technologies, from generative AI to electric vehicles to quantum computing to renewable energy. Some experts called the release of DeepSeek a “Sputnik moment” for China and said it illustrates the cross-industry acceleration of Chinese innovation.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration has made clear that the U.S. does not plan to cede its global leadership on innovation, with one of President Trump’s first executive orders focused on “removing barriers” to U.S. leadership on AI and Vice President JD Vance telling an international conference the U.S. will remain the “gold standard” on AI.
