RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – The Washoe County School District is looking to launch a pilot program to test the restricting of cell phone use.
The program would begin in January of next year and updated with feedback that would be provided in April.
Washoe County School District staff have already circulated a survey to parents, students and teachers. More than 9,700 families have provided feedback, along with 345 teachers and 80 students.
59% of families say it is important to be able to contact their children at school via cell phones, and 31% of students get more than 10 texts during school hours. The survey also found that 97% of teachers and 69% of families believe cell phones negatively affect students’ behavior at schools.
Meanwhile, 95% of teachers and 79% of families believe cell phones are a major distraction for students in the classroom.
43% of students think cell phone use should be at a teacher’s discretion, 30% of families think cell phones should be kept in backpacks or pockets, and 25% of students are in favor of a cell phone being in a bin or pouch, compared to 33% of teachers. 25% of teachers would be in favor of keeping them in a locker.
