The Hong Kong Observatory received reports that a waterspout was spotted over Victoria Harbour on Saturday, after it warned violent gusts might sweep the city.
The weather forecaster said at 1pm that the waterspout was seen swirling across the harbour, from the east to the west, 30 minutes earlier.
According to clips circulating online, a long waterspout formed near Hung Hom public pier. It then grew vertically into a spout and drifted swiftly to the west.
It dwindled and vanished subsequently at the west of the harbour after it lasted for a few minutes.
In clips circulating on social media, onlookers waiting for the ferry at Hung Hom pier were heard gasping and saying “wow, wow” at the sight of the waterspout.
