1st February 2025 – (Hong Kong) A fatal car accident near Shanghai Pudong International Airport yesterday resulted in the death of a senior tour guide associated with Miramar Travel. The deceased, believed to be aged between 50 and 60, was a well-respected figure in the travel industry, holding both tour guide and leader licences. He often operated on a freelance basis, assisting various travel agencies and hosting local tours.
According to the chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Industry Employees’ General Union, Alex Lee, the tour guide was a member of the union, which provides its members with a safety insurance policy valued at HK$200,000. The union is currently verifying whether the deceased was an active member at the time of the accident.
The tour group, which had departed on a six-day trip to East China on 26th January, was en route to the airport when the incident occurred. Fortunately, the remaining 16 members of the group, including a local guide and driver, were unharmed and managed to return to Hong Kong as scheduled.
In light of the circumstances, Lee mentioned that the family of the deceased has yet to be contacted. However, he noted that if family members face issues with expired return permits, Chinese authorities can issue a one-time permit under emergency circumstances, simplifying the process for those who have previously held permits.
