The patient was transported by North Olmsted EMS to UH St. John Medical Center’s Emergency Department with flu-like symptoms Thursday.

UH said Thursday that staff was “utilizing proper masking and isolation protocols.”

According to a spokesperson, the patient recently traveled from Tanzania to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

According to the release on Friday, the patient has arrived in Cleveland from a region experiencing the outbreak of a deadly virus.

UH infectious disease specialists and the Ohio Department of Health determined the cause of the patient’s symptoms was routine, according to Friday’s release.

We want to thank the caregivers at UH St. John’s Medical Center, who acted promptly and compassionately to provide care not only to this patient, but also taking steps to ensure the safety of other patients and staff there. Their actions exemplified the best of UH, making quick decisions in the face of incomplete information to prioritize our patients, staff and the community.

Previous reporting stated the patient arrived from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but the hospital later clarified.

UPDATE: University Hospitals have clarified that the patient arrived to Cleveland from Tanzania, not the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
