President-elect Donald Trump said Friday morning that he discussed TikTok in a call with Chinese President Xi Jinping hours before the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a controversial ban on the popular video app.
TikTok must divest from its China-based parent company ByteDance or else American users will be cut off from access.
Trump has said he has a “warm spot” for the app, a distinct change of heart after his first administration first called for a ban on TikTok. Set to begin his second term next week, Trump has indicated he may try to save the platform, despite the Supreme Court’s decision.
“It is my expectation that we will solve many problems together, and starting immediately,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Friday about his call with Xi.
TikTok CEO scheduled to attend Trump’s inauguration
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew is set to appear at Trump’s inauguration Monday. The president-elect had invited Xi as well, though the Chinese president will not be in attendance. His vice president, Han Zheng, will appear instead as a special representative for China, the Washington Post reported.
Along with TikTok, Trump said he and Xi spoke about trade relations, fentanyl and “many other subjects.”
Trump has threatened countries like China with stiff tariffs unless those foreign governments do more to prevent fentanyl and migrants from entering the U.S.
“President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the World more peaceful and safe!” Trump said Friday.
