US President-elect Donald Trump reportedly invited Chinese leader Xi Jinping to his inauguration, a remarkable departure from protocol but a hopeful sign of easing tensions between the powers.
While foreign diplomats typically attend inaugurations, there has been no foreign head of state or government present since records began in 1874. Chinese officials did not confirm whether an invitation was made or whether Xi would accept. Trump also invited Hungary’s strongman Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who is “still considering,” CBS News reported.
Trump’s relationship with Xi is fraught — he has threatened high tariffs on China — but he believes “close leader-to-leader relationships are key” to geopolitical dealing, the broadcaster said.
