REGIONAL STRATEGIC AND POLITICAL STUDIES PROGRAMME
About the Hybrid Seminar
Trump’s return to the White House could accelerate the fracturing of the global trading economy, and especially of globalised supply chains for high technology industries. The EU and Japan are also doubling down on ambitious ‘reshoring’ and industrial policy, with growing domestic political pressure to protect key industries. In this they also face competition from China and its rapid rise in renewable energy sectors and advanced manufacturing, even as Beijing struggles to circumvent the growing array of technology barriers imposed by the US, which is putting ever more pressure on third countries to go along.
Can Southeast Asian states navigate these geopolitical currents, and perhaps even thrive? This seminar looks at how these political forces are impacting global supply chains, with a focus on the automotive and biotech sectors.
