10th November 2024 – (Hong Kong) Tropical Cyclone Toraji, currently situated over the seas east of Luzon, is projected to come within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong between late tomorrow, and early Tuesday, 12th November. The Hong Kong Observatory has indicated that it will issue the Standby Signal, No. 1, in response to the storm’s trajectory.
The latest forecasts suggest that Toraji will traverse the central and northern regions of the South China Sea, moving towards the coast of western Guangdong. However, there remains uncertainty regarding its precise path and intensity as it approaches.
As Toraji interacts with the northeast monsoon, local weather conditions are expected to deteriorate by Wednesday and Thursday, bringing unsettled weather including squally showers and increased wind speeds. Swells are also anticipated along coastal areas. While Toraji may be in proximity to the Pearl River Estuary during this period, it is possible that the storm could weaken simultaneously.
The decision to escalate the weather warning to a higher Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal will depend on several factors, including the distance of Toraji from the Pearl River Estuary, its strength, and any changes in local wind conditions. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts as the situation develops.
At 4pm today, another storm, Yinxing, was noted to be approximately 220 kilometres north-northeast of Xisha, moving southwest at about 12 kilometres per hour and expected to gradually weaken. Meanwhile, Toraji was located roughly 450 kilometres east of Manila, moving west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour and forecasted to intensify further.
Tonight’s weather is expected to remain mainly cloudy with one or two showers, with temperatures dipping to around 24 degrees Celsius by tomorrow morning. Daytime conditions will feature sunny intervals and a maximum temperature of approximately 27 degrees, accompanied by moderate to fresh easterly winds, which may be strong at higher elevations.
