UPDATE: Demetrius Norwood III, the 21-year-old man involved in a hit-and-run, died on November 2, 2025.
Norwood served in the U.S. Air Force and was awarded an Air and Space Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Air and Space Training Ribbon.
Norwood was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and died in Dade County, Georgia.
PREVIOUS STORY: Georgia State Patrol Troopers are investigating a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a 21-year-old Huntsville man in early November.
A trooper responded to the scene just after 9:00pm after receiving a report of a hit-and-run crash with injuries on I-24 Westbound near mile marker 2, just across the state line.
They found out that the driver, Demetrius Norwood III, had lost his front left tire in the right lane of I-24.
While changing the tire in the right lane, a vehicle with a trailer was approaching from the rear, but swerved and struck Norwood.
The driver continued west, fleeing the scene, and the victim was pronounced dead on scene.
GSP is investigating the crash.
