The island of Dominica will be significantly more accessible for Britons dreaming of a sunny getaway by the sea and in the jungle.
This lesser-known Caribbean island is building a modern new airport that will enable direct flights from the UK for the first Time.

In contrast to the Dominican Republic, Dominica is less popular and visited less frequently than neighboring Caribbean islands like St. Lucia or Barbados.
The island is known for its incredible beaches, vibrant towns, and jungles, but getting there from the UK is not easy.
Currently, Britons use layovers, with the fastest route taking 12 hours from London to Bridgetown in Barbados and then further to Douglas-Charles Airport.
Dominica welcomes about 200,000 tourists annually, while the Dominican Republic recorded a record-breaking 6.1 million visitors in the first half of 2025.
However, these numbers could soon rise, as a new airport costing 1 billion XCD (292 million pounds) is being built on the island that will be able to accommodate international flights.
The airport is expected to be completed by 2027 and will be capable of handling larger aircraft from Europe and North America.
Possible future routes could include flights from London, Paris, New York, Miami, and other Caribbean islands.
Dominica, known as the ‘Nature Island’, impresses with beautiful beaches, mountain hikes, and hot springs, including the ‘Boiling Lake’.
Currently, the journey to the Boiling Lake takes several hours on foot, but soon access will be possible via the world’s longest cable car.

Dominica International Airport
The cable car is expected to be completed between December 2025 and early 2026.
This will make the journey to the Boiling Lake a pleasant 15-20 minute ride with great views, instead of 6-8 hours on foot.
At the stations at both ends of the cable car, various facilities such as cafes, restaurants, shops, and observation decks will be available.
The island boasts beautiful beaches, including Batibou Beach with palm trees by the water and crystal-clear water for snorkeling.
Additionally, Dominica is the only place in the world where sperm whales live, so you are likely to see them in the local waters.
There are deep gorges around the island that are ideal for whales, and strong waves protect it from shipping.

Approximately 500 whales live in the waters surrounding the island, and there are many organized tours for whale watching.
In the tropical forest, waterfalls rise up to 200 feet, including Trafalgar Falls, which consists of two streams that are 125 and 75 feet high.
The infrastructure for tourists on the island is booming: the number of hotels is increasing.
The Tranquillity Beach Resort will open its doors later this year, offering rooms, wooden cabins, spa services, and a beach bar overlooking the jungle and the sea.
The Sanctuary Rainforest Eco Resort & Spa and Anichi Resort & Spa, which is part of the Marriott group, are also in the construction phase.
