TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs thanked the US State Department and the White House for condemning China’s military exercises around Taiwan.

On Tuesday, State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said, “China’s aggressive military activities and rhetoric toward Taiwan only serve to exacerbate tensions and put the region’s security and the world’s prosperity at risk.” Bruce added that despite China’s behavior the US continues its commitment to its allies and partners, including Taiwan.

Also on Tuesday, White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt responded to a question about China’s military drills around Taiwan by saying the National Security Council briefed her on the matter that morning, per ABC News

She said that Trump is “emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait, encouraging the peaceful resolution of these cross-strait issues, reiterating our opposition to any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion.”

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) thanked the White House and the State Department for reaffirming US support for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He added, “The international community is well aware that China is a troublemaker in the Taiwan Strait and even globally, and is the party attempting to challenge the status quo.”

Lin said that as a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue to cooperate with the US and like-minded countries to ensure peace in the strait. The minister said Taiwan is committed to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific and defending the rules-based international order.

He called on all countries to jointly address China’s military threats against Taiwan.
