The meteorological organisation’s space weather forecast states that fast solar winds have the potential to bring periods of “minor geomagnetic storms” on Wednesday evening (October 29).
The report reads: “Fast solar winds have the potential to bring periods of Minor geomagnetic storms on Tuesday into Wednesday before easing through the rest of the week.
“This will bring the possibility of visible aurora for Scotland and similar geomagnetic latitudes, with a slight chance of glimpses as far south as northern England or Northern Ireland, although this is low confidence.”

Conditions across the UK are to be mixed, according to the Met Office, with sunshine and showers occurring.
Today’s report states: “A day of sunshine and showers, with brisk winds and occasionally heavy showers in the north.
“Outbreaks of rain further south will slowly clear towards the southeast, leaving drier and brighter interludes between.”
This means that the lights could be hard to see at certain times in parts of the country.
However, clear periods between this rainy weather could make the Northern Lights visible tonight.
