The Hong Kong Observatory has warned that the approaching Tropical Storm Ragasa, which could intensify into a super typhoon, may cause sea surges next week similar to levels triggered by the record-breaking Mangkhut in 2018.
The weather forecaster, which cancelled all typhoon warnings on Saturday morning as Tropical Depression Mitag moved further away from the city, said conditions would worsen next week with the possible arrival of Ragasa.
Several airlines have offered free rebooking of air tickets for journeys between Tuesday and Thursday.
The Observatory said: “Gale to storm force winds will prevail on Wednesday. The weather will be adverse with heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
“Seas will be high with swells. Under the influence of a significant storm surge, the sea level over coastal areas by then may be similar to that of Hato in 2017 and Mangkhut in 2018.”
