25th October 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Observatory has confirmed that Standby Signal No. 1 will remain in effect until at least noon today, as Severe Tropical Storm Trami continues its west-northwest trajectory, maintaining a distance of over 600 kilometres from the city. As of 8am, Trami was located approximately 740 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong.
Despite the storm’s proximity, strong winds have yet to impact the Pearl River Estuary. The combination of Trami and the northeast monsoon is expected to generate occasional strong winds offshore and in elevated areas. However, due to the prevailing northerlies and the terrain’s shielding effect, significant wind strengthening is not anticipated this morning.
The issuance of Strong Wind Signal No. 3 will depend on the evolving distance between Trami and Hong Kong, as well as any changes in local wind strength. Current forecasts indicate Trami will gradually approach Hainan Island, with local winds expected to weaken later today. Nevertheless, uncertainties remain about Trami’s future path, which may see it linger near Hainan or move eastward across the central and northern South China Sea early next week.
Weather conditions for today are expected to be mainly fine, with a maximum temperature around 29 degrees Celsius. The evening will bring increased cloudiness and the potential for one or two showers, accompanied by moderate to fresh northerly winds.
Looking ahead, the outlook for tomorrow predicts continued windy conditions with a few showers, particularly in the morning. As Trami progresses and interacts with the northeast monsoon, conditions along southern China’s coast will remain unsettled. By midweek, a dry replenishment of the northeast monsoon may bring slightly cooler temperatures, with noticeable day-night temperature variations.
