Sprint star Young plots LA 2028 revenge after New Delhi bronze

The Loughborough sprint star, 25, delivered a scorching finish to grab the final spot on the T38 100m podium behind USA pair Jaydin Blackwell and Ryan Medrano.

Blackwell, the reigning Paralympic 100m and 400m champion, stopped the clock in a championship record time of 10.70s with Young, who won gold in Tokyo, 0.8s behind Medrano with a time of 10.98s.

Self-critical Young will not race the red-hot duo at the Commonwealth Games next year – but has already set his sights on the LA 2028 Paralympics and emulating his Japanese exploits across the pond.

“Jaydin ran a really, really quick time,” he said.

“But he has been quicker, and that’s why I’m going to beat myself up because on the day, I certainly could have challenged him and maybe won gold.

“But I can’t take anything away from the Americans – they’re still the ones to beat.

“I won’t get to see them at the Commonwealths – but I’ll see them in two years’ time

“We are rivals – I came here to beat them, but I didn’t beat them today.

“Hopefully I can be even quicker and challenge them more.”

Young is one of over 30 British athletes out in the Indian capital, with the team now sponsored by official finance partner Novuna.

He got his campaign off to a flier in the weekend heats as a personal best of 10.92s propelled him into the final.

But even if he matched that in the main event, it would have been insufficient in halting Blackwell’s march to glory.

Young has endured a turbulent few years since Tokyo, admitting he hasn’t won as many races as he planned to and winning just World Championship silver in Kobe on the big stage.

But he hopes to learn lessons from his bronze here in India and use it as a platform heading into a crucial three years ahead.

“If a lot of people could have two things in a championship year, it would be a PB and a medal,” he added.

“I ticked off those two things – but I do like to win, and whenever I don’t I am harsh to myself.

“I’m going to have to watch it back – my start was probably slower than it needed to be.

“We’ve got stuff to work on – Commonwealths next year, then onto the World Championships and then the Paralympics.
