A small dog found abandoned in Connecticut is receiving treatment after sustaining a serious injury linked to the pet’s severely matted coat.

The East Haven Animal Shelter, in Connecticut, shared in a Facebook post on Tuesday, March 17, that a small white pup was brought to the shelter after two girls found the dog alone near a Home Depot in East Haven.

The animal shelter noted that the dog — now nicknamed Paddy — was found in serious condition with fur matting that “was so bad that on one leg, it had embedded all the way through his skin and muscle down to the bone.”

In the post, the shelter shared photos of Paddy’s condition, including the severe matting on his right front leg. In the photos, the dog’s leg is bleeding, with matted fur wrapped tightly around his paw. Other photos showed the mounds of matted, dirty fur that were trimmed from his body.

“Unfortunately, because of the severity of the wound and infection, his foot will need to be amputated,” East Haven Animal Shelter shared in its post.

In the meantime, Paddy is in the care of the team at Branford Vet Hospital, who are watching over him “until his infection is controlled and his foot can be amputated.”

As Paddy continues to get care, a nonprofit organization, Desmond’s Army, is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in connection with the dog’s “condition and abandonment.”

“This severe case of matting does not happen overnight, and we are not sure how long this poor boy has been in pain with no help,” the East Haven Animal Shelter wrote in its post.

“… We will continue to update everyone as he gets better!” the organization added.
