In an effort to prevent their husbands from straying, middle-aged Chinese wives are enrolling in “sex appeal training camps” that offer instruction in seduction techniques.
Recently, a group of women gathered in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, for a two-day program that cost each participant 2,999 yuan (US$420). The event’s poster proclaimed, “Sex appeal is a woman taking control of her life.” This perspective deviates from traditional Chinese views, which consider sex a private and sensitive topic.
Participants, mostly aged 35 to 55, were required to wear form-fitting cheongsams with black stockings. The first day focused on lectures about the “essence of love” and techniques for achieving orgasm. The second day emphasized kissing, sensual dancing, playfully tearing stockings, and role-playing exercises to teach them how to display their charm in intimate situations.
Among the participants were a 54-year-old woman attracted to her son’s classmate, a housewife facing divorce due to her husband’s infidelity, and a single mother whose ex-husband left with most of their savings. The camp’s catchphrase, “Reignite passion in your marriage, revive your erotic life,” attracted them.
The program empowered the participants, instilling a sense of self-value and confidence. It demonstrated that women in their middle years can exude strength and allure.
The Sex Appeal Academy organized the camp, but the instructors’ real names were not disclosed.
However, the official China Sexology Association website found no information about the academy or its instructors. Che Xiaoyan, director of the association’s nursing committee, said that registered sex therapists on the mainland are trained and work in hospitals.
The sex appeal training camp has faced widespread criticism on mainland social media, with some users calling it an unethical business practice that exploits vulnerable and anxious women. Others suggested that middle-aged women should improve their attractiveness through healthy means, such as reading and continuing their education.
