The train, which was carrying around 100 passengers, came off the tracks near the town of Riedlingen in a forested area about 158 kilometres west of Munich. The crash occurred around 6:10 pm local time. Photos from the scene showed at least two carriages lying on their side, with emergency workers seen climbing on top of them during the rescue efforts.
