S.T.Y.L.E. hosts “Dress to Impress” student fashion event | Arts And Entertainment

On Oct. 22, S.T.Y.L.E., a WMU student-led organization focused on fashion entrepreneurship, hosted their “Dress to Impress” runway event.

The event, taking place in the Student Center, allowed students to showcase varying fashion styles and expressions.

President of S.T.Y.L.E. Ja’Nya Dials, discussed the meaning of the organization, as well as the significance it has for students

“S.T.Y.L.E. stands for Sophisticated, Talented, Youthful Leaders and Entrepreneurs. It’s a fashion organization on campus that uplifts black students in fashion, but we do accept all students,” said Dials.

She continued: “It’s so we can have a voice in how to express ourselves in different ways.”

Dials talked about the three different rounds that students could participate in throughout the event, as well as its benefits for students.

“The themes are streetwear, a freestyle round and a decades round. They’ll be judged on confidence, the outfit itself and their inspiration,” said Dials.

She continued: “It just helps students have a different way to take a break and release from different things. Fashion isn’t as serious as school and other things we may be talking about.”

Additionally, Dials mentioned how she allows people to have their own space and creativity in the organization.

“I kind of let everyone have their own voice, and I always take into consideration what everybody wants to do. Even this event I did not come up with. Somebody on my e-board did and they brought it to my attention,” said Dials.

Dials discussed the other events that S.T.Y.L.E. takes part in and hosts throughout the academic year, as well as the support she seeks to gain for the organization from the WMU community.

“We have a fashion show every semester. Our first one was in February, and it was a really big turn out. Just give us a chance,” she said.

She continued: “Since we’re still fairly new, we’re still going through the course of things. Our events may start off a little strange. But just come out and show your style, and I’m pretty sure you’ll find your family here.”
