Romania’s EV market grows 89% in August as demand holds strong even without subsidies

According to the latest data from LEKTRI.CO, a key player in Romania’s electric mobility market, August 2025 saw an 89 percent increase in new electric vehicle registrations compared to the same month last year, confirming that predictability and fair pricing play a decisive role in drivers’ choices even in the absence of state subsidies like the RABLA programme.

According to LEKTRI.CO’s centralised data, 1,335 new electric vehicles were registered in August (including 57 light commercial vehicles – LCVs), representing 6.11 percent of all new vehicle registrations that month.

“We are seeing continuous consolidation of Romania’s EV market. Even without the Rabla programme, which this year was delayed compared to its usual schedule, the August figures confirm that there is strong demand. We estimate that 2025 will end at a level similar to or even above 2024, confirming the maturity of the local e-mobility market,” said Claudiu Suma, CEO of LEKTRI.CO.

In August, Hyundai Kona dominated registrations (298 units), followed by Tesla Model 3 (176 units) and the newly launched Hyundai Inster (110 units). Ford Puma and Explorer completed the Top 5, while Dacia Spring posted a sharp decline, dropping to 28th place with just 8 units registered.

In the first eight months of 2025, the EV fleet expanded by 7,005 units, with 7,929 new vehicles registered and 924 removed from circulation. With four months remaining and 4,748 units needed to match 2024’s total, forecasts point to at least maintaining last year’s performance. August’s strong results propelled Hyundai Kona to third place in the annual ranking, Hyundai Inster to seventh, while Dacia Spring remains in the lead but risks losing the top spot if weak sales persist.

At fleet level, Dacia Spring remains Romania’s most popular EV, with 19,146 units (32.9 percent of the total), followed by Tesla Model 3 (5,528 units) and Tesla Model Y (3,623 units). Thanks to its recent surge, Hyundai Kona has climbed to fourth place, overtaking Renault Zoe. By the end of August, Romania’s total EV fleet reached 58,235 registered units, including 50 vehicles deregistered during the month.

Alongside fleet growth, charging infrastructure continues to expand steadily. Major operators such as Renovatio e-Charge, Eldrive, PPC Blue, E.ON Drive, Mol Plugee, EVConnect, Plugpoint, EvGoSmartCharge, OMV-Petrom and others are adding new charging points every month, keeping Romania on a strong development trajectory.
