Ricky Hatton: Former boxing world champion dies aged 46

It comes after Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a body had been found at Hatton’s address.

A police cordon is also reportedly at his home in Manchester.

The British boxing legend held multiple world championships during his career, in the light-welterweight division, and one at welterweight.

A GMP spokesperson said: “Officers were called by a member of the public to attend Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6:45am today where they found the body of a 46-year-old man.

“There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”

According to Manchester Evening News, a police cordon is in place at his home.

One of the most popular British boxers of all time, Ricky ‘Hitman’ Hatton fought legends such as Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2024.

The news of his death comes just months after it was announced he would return to boxing with a fight planned in December.

Tributes paid to Ricky Hatton after death

Boxing fans have taken to social media following the news of Hatton’s death.

Social media group IFLTV said: “We’re sad to announce the death of former world champion and friend of IFL, Ricky Hatton.

“A legend of a man inside and outside of the ring, he was truly one of a kind.

“Rest in peace Ricky, you will be missed mate.”

Manchester City fanpage City Xtra, the team Hatton supported, said: “We are extremely saddened to learn of news regarding the passing of boxing legend and lifelong Man City fan, Ricky Hatton.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to all of his family and friends at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Hitman.”
