Hong Kong police will work with transport authorities to make it mandatory to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle, the force’s chief has said, noting that the number of cyclists killed in traffic accidents had doubled in the first eight months this year.
Commissioner of Police Raymond Siu Chak-yee said on Sunday that while the number of cycling accidents in the first eight months had dropped 7 per cent year on year to 1,105, fatalities rose from four to eight.
Six of the eight cyclists killed were not wearing a helmet, he said.
“We will cooperate with the Transport Department to make wearing a helmet while cycling mandatory,” he said.
The Transport Department said in 2022 it was considering mandating that cyclists wear helmets, citing a rise in road accidents involving bicycles.
