Red Lake County wins Class A baseball title in dominant fashion

Northern Minnesota has a new state champion.

No. 5 Red Lake County captured the 1A baseball title Saturday, June 14, at Target Field, beating No. 2 New Ulm Cathedral 15-7.

It’s the Rebels’ first state championship. Junior third-baseman Kegan Schmitz went 3-for-4 and tied a state tournament record with six runs batted in, according to the state high school league.

The win caps off a “glorious year” for Red Lake County, MSHSL’s John Millea wrote. The football team was the section runner-up. The boys basketball team went 31-3, taking third at state. The boys hockey team went 21-5, and Hayden Shulstad was the state Discussion champion.

Schmitz, Will Gieske, Collin Taggart and Ben Gullingsrud made the all-tournament team, as did South Ridge’s Gavin Willeck and, in 3A, Grand Rapids’ Sam Dick.

Early reports indicate most of the damage was in the Merrifield area. Tornado sightings were also reported near Casino, Lake Shore and Nisswa, which may be the same twister.
