Warm sunshine greeted the start of the month over many parts of southern Britain, reaching a remarkable high of 29.3C at Kew Gardens, a record for May 1.
This followed hot on the heels of the sunniest and warmest March and April on record in the UK. Another notable feature of spring has been the striking lack of rain across many regions. There was just over half the average April rainfall across the UK and northern England was particularly dry, Tyne and Wear the driest region of all, with only 7 per cent of its normal rainfall. In contrast, much of southwest England was drenched in rain and Plymouth had 180 per cent of its April rainfall.
