The Roger Bannister 50p coin was sold for £483.63 on eBay.
The coin was minted in 2004 to celebrate 50 years since Sir Roger Bannister ran a mile in under four minutes.
The coin, designed by James Butler, features a pair of running legs alongside a clock to highlight the incredible time of three minutes and 59.4 seconds that was set by the athlete in 1954.
The listing describes the item as a ‘highly sought after’ coin, which is a ‘prized possession’ for collectors.
The listing reads: “This Very Rare 50 pence coin from 2004 is a highly sought-after piece in the realm of British coin collecting.
“With a fineness of 0.5, this coin was minted during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and is a valuable addition to any numismatic collection.
“Although ungraded and uncertified, this British coin holds historical and monetary significance, making it a prized possession for collectors and enthusiasts alike.”
One keen collector bid a hefty £483.63 for the coin along with a £3.42 postage fee to snap up the 50p piece.
That means the coin was sold for a little over 967 times its shop value and will be sure to have Brits checking their change.
On May 6 1954, 25-year-old medical student Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile barrier with a time of three minutes and 59.4 seconds.
Around 3,000 spectators watched Roger cross the finish line at Iffley Road track in Oxford.
After it was first released in 2004, the coin was reissued in 2019 as part of the 50th anniversary of 50p celebrations.
The 2019 version of the coin was a commemorative version and did not enter general circulation.
