Prioritize mental health — especially in your career | Opinion

The conversation around mental health is one that is increasing consistently. While mental health practices are encouraged in all aspects of life, there’s one that seems to be left out often. Mental health practices should be implemented in your career — maybe more than anything.

Many times we get lost in our careers, especially if they revolve around something we are passionate about. Being as productive as possible can almost be addicting. Checking off the last check box, getting weeks ahead, receiving praise from coworkers — it can almost become like a drug feeling like you are thriving in your career. However, it can be costly at the same time.

While finding the line between work and play can sometimes be difficult, it is extremely important. On average, work takes up 40 hours per week. That’s roughly 160 hours a month and 2,080 hours a year. In the meantime, we need to find time to exercise, get adequate sleep and make time for social needs.

Managing all of those things on top of work may seem unnecessary and tedious, but it can be the most important thing.

When you get off work, make it a priority to leave work things at work, and to spend time with the things and people that matter most to you. Those 40 hours a week add up — so enjoy the time off you get.

While work can become the most important thing in our lives, we need to remember the fundamental things that keep us healthy and happy. It’s important to find the balance between work and home. Finding that separation can be the difference between feeling burnt out and maintaining a mentally healthy lifestyle.
