British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has issued a message after England beat Spain to win the Euro 2025 final.

Chloe Kelly scored the winning goal in the penalty shootout to see the Lionesses retain the European Championships following their previous victory back in 2022. The final had finished 1-1 after extra time with Alessia Russo’s second-half goal cancelling out an opener from Mariona Caldentey for Spain.

The final would go to a penalty shootout, which saw Niamh Charles and Alex Greenwood convert from the spot. Kelly was left with the chance to win the final for England, with the Arsenal star scoring the spot-kick to see the Lionesses confirmed as champions, to claim a 3-1 win in the shootout.

Beth Mead and Leah Williamson failed to score their penalties for England, but misses from Caldentey, Aitana Bonmati and Salma Paralluelo for Spain helped the Lionesses be confirmed as champions on Saturday night.

The victory for Sarina Wiegman’s side has gained plenty or recognition away from football, with King Charles sending a message to the England. Now the Prime Minister has taken to social media to issue his congratulations to the Lionesses after their triumph in the final.

“Champions! Congratulations Lionesses — what a team. What a game. What drama,” wrote Starmer on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“You dug deep when it mattered most and you’ve made the nation proud. History makers.”

Starmer’s message comes at the same time that it has been confirmed that England will have a victory parade to celebrate their triumph in the Euro 2025 final. The celebrations will take place in London on Tuesday once the Lionesses return from Switzerland.
