WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – President Donald Trump wants the census to no longer count those he says are in the country illegally.
The President took to Truth Social Thursday, saying quote,
“I have instructed our Department of Commerce to Immediately begin work on a new and highly accurate census… based on modern facts and figures, and importantly using the results and information gained from the presidential election of 2024. People who are in our country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS”
The move comes amid a Texas redistricting scandal, in which Republicans are trying to redraw the congressional map to secure more GOP victories for the 2026 midterms.
Census data is collected every 10 years – the last one happened in 2020.
The data dictates the amount of congressional districts per state. It also determines how many schools, hospitals and grocery stores to build.
According to Article 1 of the constitution, any changes to the census have to go through Congress.
