The iconic green school bus that Paul Wellstone traveled in across the state to campaign in his U.S. Senate bid in 1990 will appear at the state Capitol on Saturday.
The bus will be featured at the annual Walk for Recovery 2025 hosted by Minnesota Recovery Connection, a St. Paul-based recovery organization and nonprofit. The bus is being restored through donations by Wellstone’s son Dave Wellstone as a mobile platform focused on “hope, healing, and civic engagement,” according to a release.
Wellstone was in a close race when his plane crashed in northern Minnesota on Oct. 25, 2002, killing him, his wife Sheila and daughter Marcia, as well as three aides and the two pilots.
“With a new mission focused on spreading kindness, supporting communities struggling with mental health and addiction, and finding issues that bring us together, the bus is hitting the road once more,” according to a website on the bus’ restoration campaign.
The walk will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The public event will include food trucks, live music and family-friendly activities.
