Oxfordshire Reform UK politician 'silenced' on Facebook

Hao Du, who was elected as the only Reform councillor at the last local elections, was banned by the social media page Didcot Community group on Facebook.

The Didcot South councillor said he uses the page to keep residents in his ward informed on what’s going on and to answer questions or concerns from residents.

But Mr Du claimed the group has “no reason to ban him” as he hasn’t made any overtly political posts and has been following the rules.

He said: “It has more than 21,000 members. The admin and mods have been extremely difficult with me from he beginning.

“I’ve always approached each and everyone of them with respect, I’m not known as a abrasive person, I don’t like conflict.

“I’d say I have always reached out with kindness and politeness.

“Every post I have made has to go through an approval process and it is always held up without any explanation.

“I’ve tried to not let it get to me until last week there was a residents’ permit parking fee consultation in Didcot.

“On the day it was announced, both myself an Didcot West councillor Ian Snowden [Conservative] posted about it.

“Mine was held and deleted without any explanation. I spoke to the mods about this and posted again. But it too was held.

“Two days after the initial post, I contacted the admin again and was basically told if I don’t like what they’re doing I can just leave. It was very rude and passive aggressive.”

He said the information he usually shares is “very apolitical” and that it is information shared for the benefit of Didcot’s residents.

The Oxford Mail attempted to contact the admins of the group through a request to join, but a response was not given.

However, one of the admins later posted on the Didcot Community group confirming Mr Du had been removed from the group.

The admin said Mr Du was removed “due to his repeated breaches of our group rules and for harassing moderators and admins”.

Mr Du called for the admin to show evidence of this, but nothing has been provided.

The admin added: “Our team works hard to keep this space respectful and supportive and no-one is above these standards.”

Mr Du said the whole ordeal is “undemocratic and profoundly unfair” and added: “The reality is that one side is making accusations without providing proof, while simultaneously locking the accused out of the discussion entirely.”
