Ahead of his policy address on Wednesday, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu has been consulting the community on the best way forward to improve the economy and people’s livelihood.
The consultations also underline growing public expectations on the administration to explore new avenues of growth under the national development framework and resolve the many issues arising from an increasingly difficult external and internal environment.
On Wednesday, Lee must rise to the challenge.
With Hong Kong now at the crossroads of transformation, Lee must be fully aware that his midterm policy blueprint is pivotal to the next stage of development.
He must seize this opportunity to promote confidence despite economic headwinds and uncertainties arising from intensifying geopolitical tensions.
Unlike his two previous addresses that focused on post-pandemic recovery and national security, the economy and people’s livelihood are now the main focus.
In particular, Lee is expected to outline Hong Kong’s strategy to meet the goals set out during July’s third plenary session of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.
