Opinion | National Day feelgood factor must go on long after end of Hong Kong festivities

Hong Kong has high hopes that this year’s National Day holiday will lift spirits, attract tourists and boost spending as the city marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. More than 400 events are planned and there will be multiple discounts and freebies.

There are many different ways to enjoy the celebrations.

The number 75 features prominently, from the 75 trees to be planted in parks to 75 specially designed manhole covers, and 75 city tours. There is no danger of the anniversary being overlooked.

Flags, banners and posters, totalling 185,000, have been placed in 5,000 locations, giving the city a festive feel. The highlight will be a spectacular HK$18 million (US$2.3 million), 23-minute fireworks display over the harbour, celebrating China’s achievements.
