:: Nurses cling to newborn babies during a powerful earthquake in nearby Myanmar

Surveillance footage from the center aired by state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) on Sunday (March 30) showed nurse Xiong Jielan carrying a baby while kneeling, as another nurse tried to hold onto other babies in their cots as the building shook violently. Both nurses and newborns escaped unhurt.

Soon after the quake impact, maternity center staff and newborns were relocated to safety. No casualties or deaths have been reported from areas impacted by the quake in the southwest China region which borders Myanmar.

In Myanmar, state media said at least 1,700 people have been confirmed dead. The Wall Street Journal, citing the ruling military junta, reported the death toll had reached 2,028 in Myanmar. Reuters could not immediately confirm the new death toll.
