GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) reminds Coloradans that phone use behind the wheel is illegal in Colorado.
This reminder comes after Colorado State Patrol (CSP) said they issued 701 citations related to using an electronic device while driving from the beginning of the year through the end of September.
This is an 188% increase over the same time period last year when 243 citations were issued.
“It’s extremely, extremely dangerous to use your phone while driving. Taking your attention off the road, hands off the wheel, whatever it is, that’s dangerous and it’s the third leading cause of traffic crashes in the state is distracted driving,” said Sam Cole, Traffic Safety Manager at CDOT.
Those tickets carry a $75 fine and up to two points on your license. CDOT encourages people to get phone mounts for dashboards, so no one is holding their phone in their hand.
They also encourage people to use the Do Not Disturb feature on their phones to help prevent temptation.
