A nationwide outage causing major headaches this morning, from airlines, to banking, to your favorite apps. Snapchat, Ring, and Roblox were all shut down for hours.

Amazon Web Services are now recovering after a global internet outage. More than 6.5 million Americans reporting outages.

“A lot of notice from what people use every day and don’t realize they’re dependent on it,” said Kevin Mamula, Associate Director, Ohio Cyber Range Institute. “Some of the airports for booking were absolutely affected. The list goes on. There’s a reason why DNS and internet services are considered critical by the federal government.”

So what’s behind the outage? AWS said it’s because of a problem with one of its core database products.

Kevin Mamula, with the Ohio Cyber Range Institute, says as technology evolves, so must the infrastructure to support it.

“For the technologies of today to operate appropriately, they need a robust internet solution that’s always available and giving the bandwidth requirement needed for these systems,” Mamula added.

Mamula says the outage reminds consumers just how reliant we are on technology on everyday things. From holding virtual meetings, to paying your bills, and even messaging systems and non-emergency lines.

As the world of technology adapts, Mamula says expect more issues like this to arise.

“Not only will the critical infrastructure or infrastructure of the internet have to change to support modern requirements, there will be other issues,” Mamula added.
