Next Thursday will mark 80 years since the end of the Second World War, with international celebrations of the Allied victory in Europe. Here and now, the war in Ukraine is forcing former allies and enemies to relearn how to protect national sovereignty.
The aggressor is different but the existential importance of energy self-sufficiency, international trade and military firepower remains much the same. Massive power cuts in Spain and Portugal last week should remind us that even sophisticated Europeans have no God-given right to electricity.
