9th November 2024 – (Hong Kong) MTR Corporation has embarked on a challenging initiative aimed at encouraging passengers to stand still on both sides of escalators, moving away from the traditional practice of reserving the left side for those in a hurry. This campaign was unveiled on Friday, coinciding with the alarming revelation that over 400 escalator-related accidents were recorded in the first nine months of this year.
According to Cheris Lee Yuen-ling, the MTR’s chief of operating and metro segment, the data underscores the risks associated with moving on escalators, particularly as the city grapples with an ageing population. Lee stated, “With the changing times, walking on escalators and causing injuries may lead to serious consequences. It is safer to stand firm on either side of the escalator.”
The MTR operates more than 1,300 escalators that serve millions of passengers daily across its stations. The recent campaign aims to shift ingrained habits, as many commuters continue to stand only on the right side, leaving the left open for those who wish to pass.
Despite longstanding advice against walking on escalators, compliance has been poor. Out of the 430 reported accidents from January to September, approximately 60 per cent were attributed to commuters who did not hold onto handrails, walked on escalators, lost their balance after being bumped by others, or carried large items.
From today, the MTR has begun broadcasting messages in all stations, emphasising the importance of “holding the handrail and standing firm on both sides of the escalator.” Additionally, passengers with bulky bags or luggage are advised to use elevators instead of escalators.
To further reinforce this message, “safety ambassadors” clad in red vests will be stationed at MTR locations for the next month, reminding passengers to prioritise safety while using the escalators. The MTR Corporation hopes that this collective effort will lead to a significant reduction in escalator accidents and enhance overall passenger safety.
