Trichy: Attendants at the maternity ward complain that outsiders freely enter the hospital at night, engaging in theft, consumption of alcohol, and creating security concerns in ill-lit places in the toilet near the laboratory. “There is no visitor’s card issued, and there is nothing to restrict outsiders. Anybody and everybody can just walk in. At night, I hand over the phone to my wife inside the ward to avoid it being stolen,” said P Puvendhran, an attendant.
Although the hospital has more than 200 security cameras installed across different buildings, including 10 in the maternity ward area, numerous mobile phones and vehicles continue to be stolen, particularly from the waiting room and parking area in front of the ward. GH police said there are 50 cases of phone theft and two to three cases of vehicle theft every month. “Mobile theft cases are recorded regularly despite cameras being installed at various locations. Thieves find ways to avoid cameras and steal. Most of them are outsiders who sneak in at night for shelter,” said a police officer. Regarding vehicle theft, police said it often occurs when attendants, caught up in medical emergencies, forget about their vehicles.
After TOI flagged the issue with hospital authorities, they assured that more CCTV cameras will be deployed near the attender’s waiting room to curb theft. “But people also need to take equal responsibility for their belongings,” a senior official said.
