MLB warns fans of ticket scam targeting official ballpark app nationwide

Baseball fans are being told to change their passwords.

HOUSTON — Major League Baseball is warning fans about a ticket scam that’s leaving some without seats on game day, as thieves gain access to accounts through the official Ballpark app and resell stolen tickets on platforms like SeatGeek and StubHub.

According to a report by The Athletic, scammers are targeting MLB fans by using credentials stolen from other websites to break into their Ballpark app accounts. The league emphasizes that there’s no evidence of a breach in MLB’s own systems.

“Bad actors” are putting the hijacked tickets on major resale platforms, creating a nightmare scenario where legitimate ticket holders arrive at the ballpark only to discover their seats have been sold to someone else.

MLB released a statement addressing the situation, saying, “The Ballpark app is operating properly and continues to process tickets for millions of fans who attend MLB games. There is no evidence that this was a breach of the MLB system.”

The league says that the problem stems from security breaches on other platforms.

“There have been widespread reports of significant data breaches on other websites. Bad actors then have utilized leaked or stolen credentials from other websites in efforts to access the accounts of MLB fans,” the statement continued.

While an investigation is ongoing, MLB is urging fans to take immediate action to protect themselves by updating their passwords on the Ballpark app.

The league acknowledged the frustration this has caused for affected fans.

“We are working tirelessly to address this matter and protect our fans. We want all of our fans to have a great experience when they come to the ballpark and we are sorry that some fans have had to deal with an issue related to their tickets,” MLB said in the statement.
