MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) – Midland Health and Healthy City have teamed up to bring a new in-person symposium to Midland.
This one aims to keep you healthy through Lifestyle Medicine.
Lifestyle Medicine aims to prevent diseases and improve quality of life for all ages.
The Whole Health Wellness Symposium aims to provide insight into the pillars of Lifestyle Medicine and help you improve your health span.
“A lot of hope. A lot of encouraging information,” said Marcy Madrid, the Vice President of Community Health for Midland Health and the President for Healthy City.
In the past, Midland Health and Healthy City have partnered up to hold the Food is Medicine Event, which focuses on what impact certain food has on your health and received a great community response.
“We had so many people come up to us afterwards and said thank you so much for doing this. this information has been life changing,” Madrid said.
The new health symposium happening this weekend expands on that idea of food health and includes all six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine.
“We’re so excited to bring this back to the community. We took a few years off being in-person during COVID, so we just started having our live in-person events again and were excited to have the public out,” said Madrid.
The pillars are evidence-based and can help improve your physical and mental health.
They are nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, avoiding risky substances and social connections.
“So food is a component of that and probably one of the most important components but we’re also going to talk about the importance of stress and stress reduction. Stress causes so much inflammation in our bodies. We’re going to talk about sleep, which is a big issue. People don’t sleep as well or as much as they used to decades ago. Substance abuse and toxic substances that we come in contact with. exercise will be a part of the conversation,” Madrid said.
Madrid said most of the health issues Americans are facing we have control over.
“Diabetes has been said, it’s going to be one of the next big epidemics that we face in America. It’s so prevalent. It exploded so much and it’s one of the top causes of deaths in Midland. Midland and Odessa diabetes is top on the list. There’s many autoimmune disorders and cancers that are at top on the list. All these things are impacted by our lifestyle choices,” said Madrid.
Because of the size difference you are required to reserve your seat ahead of time for both parts of the event but both are completely free to the public.
The event will be held at Midland College in the Carrasco room on Saturday, November 16 from 9 AM to 12 PM, and at 1:30 they will also have a plant-based cooking demonstration put on by the West Texas Food Bank.
