Let’s set the stage for what is one amazing announcement. There was a time that the public learned that Apple phones and PCs contained Samsung memory and SSDs. The world stopped. Nobody could believe it. And there was a time when Samsung proudly acknowledged that their SSDs and other memory devices contained proprietary components, proprietary components meaning that the device was Samsung through and through. This is not one of those times.
This article falls right in place following our first post and first day at Flash Memory Summit 2025 with Micron’s announcement that their newest Micron 1y (1-gamma) LPDDR5X memory was the memory of choice for, not only the Galaxy S25 family, but other ‘foldable’ phones as well. Remember when we spoke of how we discussed all the things you experience daily as a result of flash… including mobile phones? Let’s take a closer look.
This is the newest Micron 1y (1-gamma) LPDDR5X wafer which is the beginning of their latest DDR5X memory, the worlds thinnest chip @ .61mm thick. That is 3x thinner than a quarter. The finished product looks like this shot below and can be found in the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, S25+ and S25, along with Micron Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 4.0.
This chip uses 20% less power then previous generations which means a longer battery life, longer video play and a longer gamig experience. Its speed bumps the previous gen 7.5Gbps to 10.7Gbps which translates into a much faster AI experience as well as things such as language translation which is 50% faster? Remember when I said we live in an instant world?
From the Micron display at FMS, we can see how small these chips actually are as they are displayed above the different applications. And they just don’t touch smartphones… Mission critical industrial applications and networks, automotive, and trust me when I say this will be the bread and butter of AI.
Stay tuned as we bring you more from Micron and other companies at FMS…
