Meta is about to pull the plug on its Messenger apps for Windows and macOS. A support page first spotted by Apple Insider indicates that users of its Messenger desktop apps will get in-app notifications once the deprecation process begins.
“You will have 60 days to use the Mac Messenger app before it is fully deprecated. Once the 60 days are over, you’ll be blocked from using the Mac Messenger app. We encourage you to delete the app since it will no longer be usable,” the company explained in the support page for the Mac version of the app.
While Facebook Messenger is still available to download from the Microsoft Store as of this writing, the Mac version has already been pulled from the Mac App Store. A standalone Facebook app also remains available to download on the Microsoft Store, but it appears to be just a web wrapper.
A year ago, Meta quietly replaced its native Messenger desktop apps with progressive web apps, so Windows and Mac users probably aren’t going to miss much. Messenger remains available via Facebook.com for users with a Facebook account, and desktop users without a Facebook account can also continue to use the app by going to messenger.com.
