Meet four fashion designers who are refreshing 80’s styles

Designers are refreshing fall fashion looks by interpreting iconic ’80s styles — a neon palette, chunky jewelry, power suits, bubble hems and denim on denim — with new, contemporary twists.

“My motto is: When in doubt, go ’80s,” says celebrity stylist Andrew Philip Nguyen. “It looks so sharp.”

Nguyen often pulls from his mother’s closet stocked with items featuring nipped waists, big shoulder pads, fun prints and bold jewelry from brands of that period.

To get the trending look he suggests playing around with bold accessories, painting nails in neon colors and if going with clashing prints, Nguyen recommends using jewel tones or muted colors. Here are four designers with looks to rock:

Shwetambari Mody

Shwetambari Mody’s eponymous label lets women feel elated in sateen minidresses and asymmetrical skirts, all finished with a subtle pouf. “There’s a reason that the bubble trend has lasted this long,” says the New York-based fashion designer, who likes the silhouette’s versatility with T-shirts, button-downs and turtlenecks.

Mody also borrows motifs from men’s wear for an oversized blazer, cut from oxblood-tinted Merino wool blended with cashmere and lined in silk, that can look polished with jeans, shorts or a dress. “There’s something cool about a strong shoulder for women,” she says. Besides, she adds, “It’s like the perfect fall blazer.”

Stephanie and Nicole Chehaibar

Sisters Stephanie and Nicole Chehaibar electrify ensembles with neon designs from their year-old accessories brand Esthera. With Stephanie based in Sao Paolo, Brazil and Nicole working out of New York City, the duo creates vibrant but refined bags that pop in a lemon green hue accented with gold-plated chains and trims.

Iradj Moini

An architect-turned-jeweler, Iradj Moini first made his mark in high-end fashion in the 1980s by creating ornate brooches and baubles for Oscar de la Renta. Moini continues to craft eye-catching earrings by hand in his Manhattan studio out of turquoise, Czech glass stones, pearls and smoky quartz for online retailer The SIL.

Sarah Ahmed

Having grown up in the jeans business, DL1961 cofounder and CEO Sarah Ahmed has always viewed denim as a canvas that can be used, in her words, “to exude confidence and ease at the same time.” In particular, denim-on-denim dressing has often signaled daring style, she says, “but today it’s about balance and reinvention.”
