Married British businessman, 34, ‘met mistress, 25, at waterfall to end affair before fleeing when she threw herself to her death’

A British businessman will remain in custody in Hong Kong after being charged with murder over the death of an Indonesian woman believed to be his mistress. 

Jamie Tzewee Chapman, 34, and his wife were arrested on Tuesday after the victim’s body was found at the bottom of a waterfall in Waterfall Bay Park on Hong Kong island on Monday morning.

According to the South China Morning Post, Mevi Novitasari, who was around 25 and a domestic worker from Indonesia, was having an affair with the Brit, but was not employed by him. 

Police said Chapman and the domestic worker went to the waterfall park together on Sunday at around 11pm, but the Brit was seen getting into a taxi alone around half an hour later. 

One version of events is that the pair met at the the waterfall where Chapman tried to end their relationship, but a heartbroken Novitasari jumped into the waterfall to her death.

Residents spotted the woman’s body floating in the pond on Monday morning with severe head injuries, police said. 

Preliminary examinations also revealed minor wounds to her limbs.  

The following day, Chapman and his wife were arrested when they returned to the city from mainland China. 

Superintendent Sin Kwok-ming said that the case was being treated as murder because the suspect had done ‘many unreasonable things, including not contacting police’. 

His wife, a Hong-Kong native, had been held on suspicion of assisting an offender before being released on bail pending further investigation.

Meanwhile, Chapman did not enter a plea deal during his court appearance today and his lawyer did not request bail.

The judge adjourned the case to January to allow time for further investigation.  

Novitasari was from Cilacap in Central Java province, Judha Nugraha, the director of protection of Indonesian citizens and legal entities, said from Indonesia.

Her employment agency and the Indonesian consulate have will organise the repatriation of her body and the consulate general will continue to monitor the investigation.
