Mariah Carey has joined the ranks of public figures who have shared their thoughts on Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ star-studded wedding ― and in true Mariah fashion, she kept her take notably concise.
Fans seem to be loving Carey’s three-word response when asked by paparazzi about Bezos’ June 27 wedding to author and former news anchor Lauren Sánchez, which took place in Venice, Italy, and reportedly cost $50 million.
“I wasn’t there,” the five-time Grammy winner said, as seen in a video shared on TikTok and other social media platforms Monday.
When asked if she’d been invited to the nuptials, she added: “Oh, don’t turn this into that.”
It didn’t take long for a fan on X to liken Carey’s response to a memorable moment from 2003, when she was asked about Jennifer Lopez.
“I don’t know her,” Carey said of the fellow pop diva and rumored rival at the time. Twenty-two years later, her quote about Lopez remains a viral meme.
Others also found humor in Carey’s remark.
“Who is Jeff Bezos in a Mariah Carey world?” one person wrote on TikTok.
Added another: “I love her neutrality.”
While Carey may have been absent, Tom Brady, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kim Kardashian and Oprah Winfrey were among the many stars in attendance at Bezos and Sánchez’s nuptials, which dominated global headlines for days.
The wedding drew protests among some Venice locals, who argued that it was an exploitation of the Italian city, which faces the constant threat of climate-induced flooding—a point not lost on many public figures who weren’t on the guest list and later shared less-than-favorable thoughts on the overall spectacle.
“I think we might be the only people who did not get an invite to the Bezos wedding,” actor Charlize Theron reportedly quipped to attendees at the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project Block Party, held June 30 in Los Angeles. “But that’s OK because they suck and we’re cool.”
Similarly, former “CBS Evening News” and “Today” anchor Katie Couric publicly blasted Vogue’s decision to feature Sánchez in her custom-made Dolce & Gabbana wedding gown on the June cover of its digital edition.
“Welcome to the eighties — when big hair and conspicuous consumption ruled,” Couric wrote on Instagram after Jack Schlossberg shared the image on his account. “Apparently tacky is back.”
Schlossberg, the grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, initially appeared to agree with Couric’s assessment but later deleted the post entirely.
