Manulife (International), the largest pension provider in Hong Kong, has announced its plan to redomicile from Bermuda to Hong Kong in November. This decision, outlined in a notice sent to customers, underscores the company’s confidence in Hong Kong’s standing as a global financial center.

The move positions Manulife (International), a subsidiary of Toronto-based Manulife Financial, as the second insurer to incorporate in Hong Kong following the enactment of a new law on May 23 that simplifies the redomiciliation process. This legislation allows companies to maintain their legal identity and business continuity while establishing themselves in the city, eliminating the previous requirement to wind up existing entities.

Patrick Graham, CEO of Manulife Hong Kong and Macau, stated, “Redomiciling to Hong Kong allows us to better align with the city’s robust financial and regulatory environment, strengthening our ability to meet local market needs.” The decision aligns with recent promotional efforts by Hong Kong’s Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Christopher Hui Ching-yu, who conducted a roadshow in Canadian cities to highlight the new regulatory framework.

According to data from the IndexBox platform, the redomiciliation trend could attract more insurers and companies from Bermuda and other tax havens to Hong Kong, as noted by Karina Wong, Greater China divisional president of CPA Australia.
