A 77-year-old pedestrian has died after being knocked down by a vehicle that ran onto a pavement in Hong Kong, and police have arrested the driver.

Police said on Saturday that the vehicle driven by the 51-year-old man was travelling along Lung Ma Road towards Queens Hill Estate in Sheung Shui at 7.25pm.

It reportedly went out of control and knocked down the victim after running onto the pavement when approaching the junction of Lung Ma Road and Lung Chun Road.

An online video clip showed the white private car driving onto the pavement and hitting the man, while another pedestrian narrowly escaped. The vehicle was severely damaged, and roadside railings were destroyed.
