Man, 32, arrested after cars damaged, officer assaulted at Honolulu park

Man, 44, arrested after allegedly biting HPD officer in Waikiki

A 31-year-old man was arrested in Beretania Community Park early this morning after he allegedly kicked a Honolulu Police Department officer who arrested him and his 19-year-old female friend.

At about 2:15 a.m., patrol officers responded to a report of two suspects “damaging parked vehicles on Aala and North Kukui streets,” according to an HPD statement. Officers found the two suspects inside the Aala Street park.

“As they were being detained, a 31-year-old suspect became disorderly. Both suspects were placed in handcuffs during the investigation. While handcuffed, the 31-year-old suspect kicked an officer, causing shortness of breath and pain,” HPD said.

The owner of one of the vehicles told police the damage was estimated at more than $2,000.

The male suspect was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct and first-degree assault against a law enforcement officer. The woman was arrested on suspicion of second-degree of criminal property damage.

The officer drove himself to a hospital, where he was treated, listed in good condition and released, police said.

This was the second arrest in two days involving an alleged assault on HPD officer. On Thursday, a 44-year-old man was arrested in Waikiki after he allegedly bit open an officer’s forearm following a foot chase.
