Macron urges Putin to agree ceasefire with Ukraine, in first talks since 2022 – POLITICO

“He called for the establishment, as soon as possible, of a ceasefire and the launch of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia for a solid and lasting resolution to the conflict,” the Elysée said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin noted that Putin reminded Macron that the war in Ukraine “is a direct consequence of the policies of Western states,” and warned that any peace agreement in Ukraine must be “long-term.”

Regarding Iran’s nuclear program, both leaders agreed on the need to resolve the crisis exclusively through diplomatic means.

“In this regard, the importance of respecting Tehran’s legitimate right to develop peaceful nuclear energy and its continued fulfillment of [its] obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, including cooperation with the IAEA, is emphasized,” the Kremlin said.

Both the Kremlin and the Élysée confirmed that the two presidents had decided to coordinate their efforts and to speak again soon to follow up on the matter.
